The Music Metadata Project:
Investigating the compass (pitch range) of European music
from 1000 CE to 1650 CE.

The music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods provide much of the bedrock of modern practice. Whilst we know a great deal of the theory from surviving treatises, there are still aspects of practical music making of these periods we do not have clear information on. The Gamut (complete range of musical pitches) appears to remain static for a signficant period, then in the late 15th century an important change occurs. The compass of notated music changes, expanding into both higher and lower pitches. This project seeks to gain insight into the how the notated music, both as pieces and individual parts, changes across this incredibly interesting period in music.
